I went to a fun Herb group meeting last night with a Herbal Spring Cleaning theme but had a strange request: did I want a pet, but not in the traditional sense and I was able to taste it first! This pet is called ‘Herman’ - the friendly
pet and cake! It looked a fun short-term pet activity for me to do with my daughters so I accepted. There is just a page of instructions and a tub of mixture which I have to ‘look after’ for 9 days and I end up with a lovely cake at the end, but first I have to ‘feed’ Herman with sugar, milk, flour etc on certain days and when he has grown enough, I split the mixture into four and give 3 parts away to friends with the page of instructions to carry on this ‘chain’ cake tradition and make myself a ‘Herman’ cake with the last bit. How cool is that!
Just off to check on Herman now.

My goodness, that brings back memories. I was given a herman cake mixture many years ago when I was about 14 years old. I remember it being in a huge glass bowl covered with a tea towel in the kitchen and it seemed to grow at an amazing rate.
It is great that these friendship chains are still going.
