Do You Want To Meet James Wong?

September 11, 2009

If yes, you’ll need to get your skates on because booking of the event where you can meet James Wong closes tomorrow - 12th September.

The Herb Society’s AGM and Conference is being held on 26th to 27th September in Stratford-upon-Avon. The speakers will be James Wong, ethnobotanist and presenter of the BBC’s Grow Your Own Drugs, and Anna Parkinson, BBC journalist and author of Nature’s Alchemist: John Parkinson, Herbalist to Charles I, a book about her ancestor who was born two years earlier than Stratford’s most famous son, William Shakespeare.   James and Anna will focus on herbs Shakespeare would have known, from their different perspectives.   On Sunday 27th there will be a special visit to Hall’s Croft, home of Shakespeare’s daughter Susanna and son-in-law John Hall, which will be led by Sue Minter.

Reduced rate accommodation is available via the herb society’s sponsor, NFU Mutual.   To apply for a place at the AGM/Conference please complete the application which can be downloaded from

Has anyone addressed the issue? Namely that James Wong is an ethnobotanist rather than a medical herbalist?

Andrea, exactly what is your issue? You don’t have to be a qualified medical herbalist to make herbal products which will support your body and help you maximise your own good health. Herbs are for the people and can be used by the people. You don’t need a degree to do that, just time, willingness to learn and grow your own herbs and then the confidence to play with them. It’s not rocket science. If you want to know more about herbal constituents and cellular interactions or exactly how the body works then go to university by all means or do your own independent learning. A degree may be helpful and necessary if you’re going to take responsibility for other people’s health, but not if it’s just your own or your family’s.

If you missed James Wong in September at the Herb Society’s AGM then you can still join him and other ethnobotanists and those practiced in herbal medicine on a short course at Schumacher College

James makes a good point - that a medicine can be just as effective whether coming out of a bottle or the cells of a plant. So why can’t the FDA understand that? Their single biggest reason for not legalizing cannabis is that “the raw marijuana plant cannot meet the standards for identity, strength, quality, purity, packaging and labeling required of medicine”. I think Mr. Wong would agree with me that that is nonsense!

7,000 people were murdered by the cartels in 2009 because the US kept cannabis illegal. This year they’re on track to kill at least 9,000. Who supports keeping it illegal?
