We went for a walk last weekend looking for elderberries. Most of them were over-ripe but right at the end of the walk we found a whole row of trees with perfect berries which I’ve
turned into Elderberry Syrup (usually know as Elderberry Rob). I make this every year, it makes a lovely hot cordial to take when I feel as if a cold/flu are starting. It has anti-viral properties and speeds up recovery. You can add your favourite spices eg ginger or chilli - warming, cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon or even some orange juice or alcohol!
If you are collecting berries, make sure you avoid the green berries. The berries and juice should not be eaten raw; cook them first. You can use them to make elderberry syrup, wine or jelly.

I have a neighbor who makes elderberry jam, I think, but I have never tasted them. Maybe I’ll see if she has any extra, sounds good!
Elderberry Syrup sounds delicious. I’ll have to try. How difficult is it to find the berries?
