Elderberry Syrup

September 21, 2007

We went for a walk last weekend looking for elderberries.  Most of them were over-ripe but right at the end of the walk we found a whole row of trees with perfect berries which I’ve

turned into Elderberry Syrup (usually know as Elderberry Rob).  I make this every year, it makes a lovely hot cordial to take when I feel as if a cold/flu are starting.  It has anti-viral properties and speeds up recovery. You can add your favourite spices eg ginger or chilli - warming, cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon or even some orange juice or alcohol!

If you are collecting berries, make sure you avoid the green berries.  The berries and juice should not be eaten raw; cook them first.  You can use them to make elderberry syrup, wine or jelly.

If you’d like a recipe for Elderberry Syrup to counter all those winter colds that come around, there is one in my September newsletter.  To subscribe, just click on the box to the top right of the blog or visit my website and click on the envelope icon in the yellow box.  You’ll also receive a copy of a free e-book ‘7 Everyday Herbs Made Simple’ which gives you ideas on using 7 herbs to enhance your meals in easy ways.

I have a neighbor who makes elderberry jam, I think, but I have never tasted them. Maybe I’ll see if she has any extra, sounds good!

Elderberry Syrup sounds delicious. I’ll have to try. How difficult is it to find the berries?

I’m a big fan of herbs and natural products. Any posts on aromatherapy would be appreciated.
